Job Description


Accountabilities
  • Support the design, development, implementation, and execution of technical projects and new breeding and analytics methodologies to accelerate genetic gain execute and test these ideas in the field
  • Partner with and contribute to the development of elite inbred lines and hybrid varieties of corn and rice that meet the performance targets set by the elite pipeline market segment teams
  • Run Genome Wide selections for new breeding starts and champion reducing the cycle time.
  • Design the strategy for identifying, introgressing, and testing novel sources of value-added genetic diversity
  • Contribute to the development of customized training sets for genomic prediction of exotic haplotype introgression
  • In conjunction with applied geneticists and data scientists , develop new analytical methods for quantitatively measuring, prescribing and characterizing functional genetic diversity at key points of the breeding pipeline
  • Identify new challenges and opportunities to inform novel projects by building strong partnerships with internal and external collaborators
  • Consistently document and communicate results of research on data mining, analysis, and modeling approaches to ensure strategic forward planning and alignment within and across teams.
  • Work in diverse, cross-collaborative teams with plant breeders, data scientists, computational biologists, and IT

Knowledge, experience & capabilities
Critical Knowledge:
  • PhD in plant or animal breeding, plant physiology, or quantitative genetics
  • In depth knowledge of plant breeding, quantitative genetics, and field experimental design
  • Expertise with tools for data analysis, statistical computation, and visualization (such as Python, R or JMP) programing and pipeline development skills integrating large, complex datasets from structured and unstructured sources.
  • Demonstrated experience working with molecular marker-based studies applied to plant breeding, such as marker-assisted selection, genome-wide phenotype-to-genotype association, and genomic selection.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology and gene editing technology is a plus but not necessarily required
  • Project management experience in a team-oriented atmosphere ability to develop and adhere to a budget
  • Demonstrated skills to use simple interfaces to build visualization capabilities of analysis outputs and results.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, cross-functional, collaborative environment
  • Creative, innovative, and strategic thinking willingness to be bold and take risks on novel ideas.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

  • Critical Experience:
  • Molecualr Breeding experience of 3-5 years either in commercial or public/academic setting
  • Experience in operating independently in a complex matrix environment
