Job Description
Oil Market Analyst (China focus)
Singapore
FGE NexantECA
Who We Are
FGE NexantECA is a global energy and chemicals intelligence business, helping energy companies, traders, investors, and governments make better decisions in some of the world's most complex and fast-moving markets.
We combine deep market expertise with rigorous data-driven analysis across oil, gas, LNG, chemicals, and the energy transition. Our clients range from major producers and utilities to trading houses and sovereign funds - and they rely on us to cut through noise and give them a clear view of what's happening and what comes next.
We're also in the middle of something genuinely exciting. We're launching Lumen, a next-generation intelligence platform that moves us beyond static research towards something faster, more connected, and more directly usable by clients. It's a good moment to join - and this role is part of that story.
The Role
We are looking for a driven individual to join our China Oil team, a crucial part of our broader Asia Oil team. You'll develop deep expertise in China's refined product markets — covering refinery operations, product supply and demand balances, trade flows, pricing, policy shifts, etc.
You'll work closely with specialists across the company, developing a deep understanding of China's energy sector and how broader market forces shape domestic policy decisions, refinery operations, and demand responses. Equally, you'll analyse how shifts within China ripple outward — influencing international product balances, crude trade flows, and regional price dynamics.
Job Requirements
What We're Looking For
We're open to candidates with up to 5 years of relevant experience. Direct knowledge and experience on China's market is a strong plus.
We're particularly interested in people who:
- Are genuinely curious about refined product markets, trade economics, and regional market structure
- Are highly numerate and comfortable working with large, complex datasets that don't have clean answers
- Think critically about market balances, pricing, refinery behaviour, and trade dynamics
- Communicate clearly — in writing, in charts, and in conversation
- Are comfortable managing multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
- Are eager to learn, develop, and take on increasing ownership over time
- Have started exploring how AI and modern data tools can support analytical work — or are keen to
Technically, advanced Excel with strong modelling aptitude is essential. Python or SQL is a meaningful plus. We're also interested in candidates who are actively exploring how AI and LLM tools can accelerate research, structure insight, and improve how analysis gets communicated — this is becoming a genuine part of how we work. Fluency in English is required; Chinese reading and speaking at business level proficiency is required.
Job Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Market Research, Analysis & Modelling
- Collect, clean, and analyse China data, running and refining our in-house models as market conditions and policy landscape evolve.
- Develop new models where existing frameworks fall short of capturing emerging market dynamics.
- Translate data and supply/demand balances into clear, forward-looking insights and timely written analysis, contributing to both regular publications and ad-hoc client work.
- Assess product trade flows and arbitrage dynamics to build and sustain a China forecast that feeds into our broader regional outlook.
Intelligence Gathering and Client Management
- Engage with trade contacts and industry sources to ground-truth official data and surface insights that quantitative analysis alone may miss.
- Deliver clear, actionable analysis on China oil market developments to clients, both in written form and during meetings and calls.
- Respond to ad hoc client queries on China-specific topics with well-reasoned, evidence-based answers, drawing on the full depth of the team's coverage.
- Build direct client relationships over time, including through business travel, to deliver broader market insights and deepen client engagement.
Data & Tools
- Work with large, often imperfect datasets and bring structure and clarity to ambiguous situations
- Contribute to how analysis is integrated into Lumen as the platform evolves
- Use AI and data tools where relevant to accelerate research and improve how insight is communicated
