Job Description

Job Purpose

  • Ensure compliance with all Merlin/ SEALIFE CWE animal programs, processes, and standards across SLBK
  • Comply with written standards and protocols for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for water quality, operational efficiency, cleanliness, and animal health
  • Responsible for delivering keeper talks and guest interaction programs
  • Responsible to action and manage water quality of designated areas, with sufficient knowledge to action and remedy any problems
  • Ensure consistently high standards of hygiene, cleanliness, and professionalism throughout all aquarium areas
  • Responsible for reporting and maintaining a safe workspace for guests and colleagues
  • Maintain detailed and accurate animal records including husbandry, feeds, and health
  • Effectively carry out all daily husbandry aspects of designated animal collections ensuring best practice of animal husbandry.
  • Complete thorough observations on animal health, welfare, and behavior, and deliver appropriate enrichment to designated displays and species

  • Works within the scope of Merlin and CWE Policy and Procedures to implement and improve Curatorial practices.
  • Prioritises and identifies more critical and less critical activities and tasks.

Applied Knowledge & Specialist Skills

  • Demonstrates specialist skill/knowledge in one or more areas e.g. hazardous animals, Diving, water quality etc.
  • Demonstrates skills to promote learning and development within area of responsibility.
  • Competently use the technologies provided for the delivery of talks, record keeping, etc.
  • Demonstrates implementation of animal identification procedures e.g. micro-chipping, banding, photo identification.
  • Is able to access produce and interpret specimen and taxon reports i.e. for monitoring trends such as weight, diet preference etc.
  • Demonstrates the ability to monitors animals carefully for stress and injury during capture and restraint.
  • Assists with the capture and restraint of non-hazardous species within area of responsibility (minimum of 5 species).
  • Explain behavioural enrichment principles and practices.
  • Administers treatments and completes treatment record sheet.
  • Can describe pathogens relevant to species within area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrate actions to reduce risks of zoonotic disease transfer between collection and humans (minimum of 10 species).
  • Describes the collection planning process at institutional and regional level.
  • Explain why conservation education is important for aquariums.

  • Demonstrates an ability to identify potential problem and suggest solutions
  • Demonstrates ability to follow established procedures for solving technical problems (ex. supersaturation, ozone leak, escaped animal)
