The Automation Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and driving automation initiatives across manufacturing operations to improve productivity, quality, reliability, and operational efficiency. This role oversees the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimisation of industrial automation systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and Industry 4.0 solutions while leading a team of automation engineers and managing capital investment projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead automation engineering activities to support safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations
- Manage automation projects, equipment upgrades, machine modifications, and new production line installations
- Develop, modify, and optimise PLC, HMI, vision system, and SCARA robot programs to improve productivity and equipment performance
- Troubleshoot automation, control, instrumentation, and industrial network issues to minimise downtime and improve system reliability
- Drive Industry 4.0 initiatives, including MES, IIoT, AI-based inspection, manufacturing data collection, and system integration projects
- Lead CAPEX projects, including planning, budgeting, risk assessment, execution, and project commissioning
- Collaborate with production, maintenance, quality, IT, and external vendors to implement automation solutions and process improvements
- Establish and maintain automation standards, system documentation, backup procedures, and change management controls
- Analyse manufacturing and equipment performance data to identify improvement opportunities and enhance operational efficiency
- Lead, coach, and develop the automation engineering team while providing technical guidance and training to plant personnel
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, automation engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- Minimum 10 years of experience in industrial automation, control systems, or manufacturing engineering
- Proven experience in a managerial or leadership role within an automated manufacturing environment
- Strong hands-on experience in PLC programming, troubleshooting, and control system integration
- Experience with vision inspection systems, SCARA robots, and AI-based manufacturing applications
- Solid knowledge of MES, IIoT, smart factory technologies, manufacturing databases, and industrial networking protocols such as Modbus, Profinet, and EtherNet/IP
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, machine drawings, instrumentation diagrams, and mechanical drawings
- Strong project management skills with experience managing CAPEX budgets, timelines, resources, and multiple stakeholders
- Experience in electronics assembly, HDD, semiconductor, or high-volume manufacturing environments is highly preferred
- Good command of English
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Power BI, data analysis, and reporting tools
