Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Bangkok is a large diplomatic mission of around 150 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK's objectives including on growth, trade, security, women and girls, climate change, consular services and law enforcement. This is an exciting opportunity to join our diverse team. We are looking for an excellent team player who can think strategically to shape and deliver UK-Thailand cooperation on energy policy and green transition.
The jobholder will deliver across the UK's energy and green growth objectives in Thailand, supporting the UK–Thailand Strategic Partnership and wider UK priorities in Southeast Asia. The jobholder will work closely with other sections of the Embassy including Political and Department of Business, Innovation, Trade and Science (BIST), and with senior contacts in government, private sector, and academia. They will work to the Counsellor responsible for Climate, Energy and Multilateral cooperation. The jobholder will also be part of the UK's regional Southeast Asia Climate Network.
The UK's mission is to create a world free from poverty on a liveable planet and we will push for the ambition needed to keep the Paris Agreement and 1.5 degrees alive. In Thailand, the UK's activity on energy spans policy monitoring, lobbying and reporting, events and media engagement and small amounts of technical assistance and other outreach efforts to accelerate the global transition to net zero, encourage green growth and find opportunities for UK expertise and UK companies.
The jobholder will provide high-quality policy analysis, lobbying and reporting (both verbal and written) on Thailand's energy transition, including power sector reform, renewables, energy efficiency and carbon capture. They will remain abreast of UK policy in these areas, finding areas of alignment. The successful candidate will need to be a strategic thinker and utilise and build on their understanding of Thailand's energy policy, including to represent the UK Government in meetings and outward-facing events. The jobholder will also oversee the implementation of UK-funded technical assistance on green investment and carbon capture.
