Title: FinOps SRE Engineer/Lead
SREs who may not be pure FinOps specialists but have strong exposure to financial asset management, cost controls, and ROI – LEAST PREFERRED for applying.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of IT experience
- Involvement multiple end-to-end enterprise solution programs
- 5+ years experience in cloud technologies and/or governance, Microsoft Azure
- 3+ years involved in enterprise cloud strategy
- 3+ years experience involved in enterprise cloud leadership and governance
- 2+ years experience in Cloud FinOps (Cloud and Finance)
- Financial management experience
- Experience identifying cost reduction opportunities and strategies in Microsoft Azure
- Hands-on cloud cost optimization and resource efficiency experience.
Immediate need for a Sr. FinOps Engineer to join a new FinOps team and practice that is rapidly being developed. The ideal candidate will have experience with the following:
- Identifying and resizing VMs to optimize and reduce costs.
- Establishing governance & controls to improve long-term cloud spend.
- Evaluating and implementing automated tagging management solutions.
- Collaborating with finance, enterprise architecture, and engineering teams to enhance visibility and ensure aligned communications and proactive cost management.
- Providing strategic knowledge and guidance to build out a new FinOps framework.
Key Responsibilities:
Spend Reduction Activities:
- Identify and resize oversized VMs to optimize resource utilization and reduce costs.
- Utilize reserved instances and savings plans to achieve cost savings.
- Deallocate machines that are not in use, especially during non-productive hours, to minimize waste.
- Implement and track the effectiveness of various cost-saving measures across the cloud environment.
Governance and Control:
- Establish and enforce governance policies and controls to mitigate future cloud spend and ensure compliance.
- Develop and implement guardrails to prevent unnecessary resource allocation and ensure efficient use of cloud resources.
- Monitor compliance with established policies and take corrective actions as needed.
Tools and Automation:
- Implement and manage a tagging management solution to automate and correct tags, ensuring accurate cost allocation.
- Assist in the selection and implementation of a cloud financial management tool (e.g., Flexera, Apptio) to enable deep dive analysis and chargeback capabilities.
- Identify opportunities for automation to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
Visibility and Collaboration:
- Enhance visibility at the beginning of the product phase to avoid reactive measures and ensure proactive cost management.
- Collaborate with finance, enterprise architecture, and engineering teams to ensure alignment and effective communication.
- Engage with stakeholders to understand their requirements and provide insights into cloud spend and optimization opportunities.
Tagging and Chargeback:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive tagging strategy to identify business units consuming assets and allocate costs accordingly.
- Implement Azure policies to prevent duplicate tags and ensure accurate tagging.
- Support the development of a chargeback model to allocate costs to business units based on usage.
Resource Allocation and Staffing:
- Work with contract resources and matrix teams to achieve spend reduction targets and ensure effective resource allocation.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other team members as needed.
- Mentor and train team members on best practices in cloud cost management and optimization.
Service Mapping and Policies:
- Conduct service mapping to identify which resources belong to which business units and develop a tagging structure based on this mapping.
- Establish high-level policies to control resource allocation and costs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Continuously evaluate and improve policies and processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Strategic Engagement and Support:
- Engage with providers for strategic knowledge and guidance to build out the FinOps framework and support long-term goals.
- Define the skill set required for right-sizing activities and FinOps issues, ensuring the team has the necessary expertise.
- Stay up-to-date with industry best practices and emerging trends in cloud cost management and optimization.
