The Intermediate Designer is involved in all phases of a design project which includes the design of new build or refurbishment projects, including FF&E, and colour schemes. The Intermediate designer oversees the project from beginning to end being one of the key contacts for correspondence with the client, operator, suppliers and consultants.
Intermediate designers work in a range of different settings. The job combines the efficient and functional use of space with an understanding of aesthetics. The various phases of a project include, briefing, concept design, schematic design, design development, design documentation and contract administration including project coordination and site coordination where required. Other areas of the job will include budget pricing, budget management and procurement.
In addition, the Intermediate designer may also be involved throughout the construction stage of a project. This can involve coordinating the design on-site and reviewing contractor submittals and responding to RFI's, if the project scope includes this phase of a project.
Responsibilities
Intermediate Interior Designers will plan and organize the design of several project types. Projects may take place in a range of settings, including, but not limited to:
- hospitality (hotels and F&B)
- private residences and residential developments
- office spaces
- retail locations, e.g. malls, shops, cafes, forecourts
- leisure spaces, e.g. cinema, recreation complexes
- Assist seniors in creating and developing design concepts, creating initial design ideas, conceptual frameworks acquiring key information about potential projects, and discussing any project requirements
- Developing creative ideas and acquiring key information about potential projects, discussing requirements in detail with clients (the brief) and following project schedules
- Understanding individual clients needs and space planning, developing design concepts in consultation with the seniors and client and establishing final briefs
- Considering materials and costs according to set budgets and reviewing quotes from suppliers
- Producing sample or mood boards for presentation to clients
- Sourcing products, for example FF&E, decoration items, and providing samples for clients; this will include obtaining costs for all items and coordinating budgets
- Preparing detailed working drawings, designs, plans, models and schemes, often using computer-aided design (CAD) or relevant software
- Proficient in working in different design software (e.g. Photoshop, SketchUp)
- Independent drawing and specification documentation packages review for technical, operational, cost suitability and design for projects run by other designers
- Surveying and measuring building interiors
- Coordinating with Suppliers and having a knowledgeable grasp of technical details and requirements
- Reviewing work at the design stage and on-site
- Working closely with quantity surveyors to establish costs and work schedules on projects where required. Working with architects and other design professionals to determine the best use of space, and with manufacturers and contractors when required in a specific phase

Other Responsibilities
- Coordinating/collaborating within a team with other designers in all phases, from start to completion, of projects undertake
- Mentoring other designers on technical, operational, cost suitability and design detailing
- Identify and manage resources required for the project and constantly review and feedback to Seniors or the manager in charge
- Assist and work together as part of a team, creating and maintaining a harmonious work environment
- Be readily available always to deal with problems or concerns

Qualifications
- A degree in Interior Design or Architecture
- A proven record of success in an interior designer level
- At least four years hospitality experience
- A wide knowledge of the design industry
- Presentation skills
- Able to handle situations with an appreciation of the demands of conflicting interests and of meeting both project and statutory requirements
- Communication, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent English skills (written, reading, spoken)
- Required to have advanced knowledge of MS Office, Autodesk and Adobe applications
- Possesses excellent computer skills for design i.e. FF&E specification software, CAD, sketch-up, Photoshop, BIM
