The mechanical design engineer will join a multi-disciplinary global R&D team that is continuously introducing new optical communications products at an aggressive cadence. The mechanical design engineer will contribute to the necessary innovation that enables each new product generation to deliver major leaps forward in capacity, performance and cost-effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include the following elements, balanced according to the evolving needs of the organization and the aptitudes of the mechanical design engineer:
- Apply a solid knowledge of mechanical engineering and manufacturing principles to develop new solutions and to evaluate the merits and risks of alternative design concepts.
- Apply FEA and CFD analysis tools to predict stress states due to thermal and mechanical influences, dynamic behavior of structures and electronics cooling performance.
- Apply 3D mechanical CAD tools to develop fully-documented detailed mechanical designs.
- Perform the detailed mechanical design of precision production tooling used to assemble products.
- Perform the detailed mechanical design of automated machine, hardware development, electrical connection diagram and programing/coding for low to high scale production environment.
- Apply the Lumentum mechanical engineering design process to compile design requirements, evaluate conceptual designs, deliver detail design documentation and confirm performance of realized designs as well as project management.
- Contribute to the development of manufacturing processes used to build hermetically sealed device enclosures.
- Participate as a positive team member, working effectively with colleagues to ensure that design decisions which span multiple disciplines are balanced and optimized for the overall performance of the product.Communicate effectively with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduate of a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's Degree program or higher.
- Ability to articulate a rich intellectual understanding of the fundamentals of the mechanical engineering curriculum including thermodynamics, heat transfer, solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, dynamics, material science and machine design.
- Highly motivated and energetic with a driving internal desire to learn.

- Knowledge of and ability to apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT) practices as well as tolerance analysis.
- Knowledge of reliability engineering and quality systems of electronics devices.
- Knowledge of and experience in project management and NPI process development.
- Knowledge of jig/fixture design and related hardware.
- Knowledge of electrical components and basic electrical circuitry.
- Knowledge of and experience in supplier capability assessment audit.
- Knowledge of and experience in factory ERP/MRP system.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply lean manufacturing principles.
- Knowledge of and ability to design automation machine and automated system.
