Role Purpose
The Mechanical Technician will support and execute overhaul, inspection, and reassembly activities of Gas Turbines and Steam Turbines during planned outages and shutdowns. The role focuses on handson mechanical work under the supervision of senior technicians, engineers, or OEM representatives, ensuring work is completed safely and in line with approved procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Turbine Overhaul Activities
- Assist in dismantling, inspection, cleaning, and reassembly of gas turbine and steam turbine components during minor and major overhauls.
- Carry out mechanical work on casings, rotors, blades, vanes, diaphragms, bearings, seals, couplings, and fasteners under supervision.
- Support rotor handling, lifting, positioning, and installation using approved rigging and lifting plans.
- Perform bearing inspection and replacement, lubrication activities, and sealing checks as instructed.
Mechanical Measurements & Inspections
- Carry out dimensional checks using feeler gauges, vernier calipers, dial gauges, micrometers, and torque wrenches.
- Assist in checking clearances, runout, and alignment of turbine components.
- Identify and report abnormal conditions such as wear, scoring, corrosion, or foreign object damage (FOD).
Outage & Shutdown Support
- Support engineers and senior technicians during critical outage activities, including casing closing, coupling alignment, and turbine rolling.
- Assist in lube oil system cleaning, flushing, reinstatement, and inspections.
- Participate in trial runs, slow roll, and startup support following overhaul completion.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow LOTO procedures, permittowork systems, lifting plans, and confined space requirements.
- Comply with HSSE standards, OEM manuals, and site safety rules at all times.
- Ensure safe handling, protection, and cleanliness of turbine components and tools.
Documentation & Teamwork
- Complete assigned job cards, checklists, and inspection records accurately.
- Provide daily progress updates to supervisors during outage periods.
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams, as well as OEM supervisors and contractors.
Education & Experience
- ITI or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- 3 to 5 years of handson experience in Gas Turbine and/or Steam Turbine overhaul activities, preferably in a power plant, OEM workshop, or turbine service environment.
- Exposure to planned outages, shutdown maintenance, and turbine inspections is required.
Skills & Competencies
- Basic understanding of gas and steam turbine mechanical components.
- Ability to use standard mechanical tools and measuring instruments.
- Familiarity with OEM procedures and turbine overhaul practices.
- Strong awareness of safety requirements during outage and overhaul work.
- Willingness to work shift duty, extended hours, and outage schedules.
