Software engineering is about to change more in the next five years than it has in the last fifty.
At Emergent, Engineering Managers are not project managers or delivery coordinators.
They are technical leaders responsible for building teams capable of solving problems that have never existed before.
You'll lead engineers building the infrastructure, runtime systems, distributed platforms, and product experiences powering autonomous software creation at global scale. Your responsibility extends beyond execution—you'll shape engineering culture, raise technical standards, hire exceptional talent, and create an environment where world-class engineers do the best work of their careers.
You'll work alongside Product, Research, Design, and Infrastructure teams to build systems that serve millions of users while operating at the frontier of AI. If you enjoy building elite teams, making difficult technical decisions, and creating high-performance engineering organizations, you'll thrive here.
What You'll Own
- Build exceptional engineering teams
- Recruit, mentor, and grow high-performing engineers while creating an environment of ownership, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Drive architecture, execution, and delivery for complex backend systems, developer platforms, infrastructure, and customer-facing products.
- Raise the engineering bar
- Establish high standards for engineering quality, operational excellence, system design, code reviews, testing, and production ownership.
- Deliver at startup speed
- Partner closely with Product, Design, Research, and Leadership to rapidly turn ambitious ideas into reliable production systems.
- Ensure teams own services from design through deployment, observability, incident response, reliability, and continuous improvement.
- Hire exceptional engineers, improve engineering processes, develop future technical leaders, and help build one of the highest talent-density engineering organizations in AI.
- Shape the future of AI software engineering
- Help define how engineering teams build products in a future where autonomous agents become core collaborators in software development.
What We're Looking For
We're less interested in titles and more interested in builders who have consistently delivered ambitious systems through strong technical leadership.
You likely have:
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
- 2+ years leading or managing high-performing engineering teams
- Strong software architecture and distributed systems experience
- Experience building large-scale production systems serving millions of users
- Excellent backend engineering skills in Go, Java, Kotlin, Python, C++, Rust, or similar languages
- Proven ability to balance technical decision-making with people leadership
- Strong product thinking and customer-first mindset
- Experience hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers into senior technical leaders
- A track record of delivering ambitious projects in fast-moving environments
- Experience with AI or LLM systems is helpful—but not required. Exceptional engineering leaders learn quickly.
You'll Stand Out If You Have
- Experience at high-growth technology companies or engineering-first startups
- Built highly scalable distributed systems or developer platforms
- Worked on cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or backend architecture
- Led teams responsible for mission-critical production services
- Built strong engineering cultures focused on ownership and speed
- Experience working closely with AI, ML, or applied research teams
Who Thrives Here
- The best Engineering Managers at Emergent aren't optimizing for headcount, they're optimizing for impact.
- Building teams that consistently outperform expectations
- Making difficult technical decisions with incomplete information
- Hiring exceptional people and helping them grow
- Moving quickly without compromising engineering quality
- Solving ambiguous, first-principles engineering problems
- Taking ownership rather than waiting for direction
- Working with other highly ambitious builders who care deeply about craft
