Overview:
The Sugarcane Agronomist will lead large-scale estate sugarcane agronomy operations, focusing on sustainable crop production and agronomic excellence. You will oversee field research, drive best practices, and support digital agriculture innovations to maximize yield, quality, and environmental outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement agronomy strategies for planting, ratoon management, fertilization, irrigation, and pest control at scale.
- Design, conduct, and analyze agronomic experiments and field trials to establish best practices and support innovation.
- Supervise farm records, safety procedures, and environmental compliance. Manage fertilization, irrigation, weed, and pest-control programs.
- Implement precision agriculture tools like GIS, drones, and farm-management software to optimize operations.
- Collect and analyze field data to inform agronomic decisions and improve crop performance.
- Lead agronomy staff, contractors, and technical teams; provide training and ensure alignment with standards.
- Coordinate with R&D, extension teams, suppliers, and farmers to ensure consistent practice adoption.
- Develop and manage budgets, monitor agronomy expenses, and ensure cost-effective operations.
- Prepare detailed agronomy reports and present insights to senior leadership.
- Promote environmentally sustainable practices and ensure adherence to regulatory and company policies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Crop & Plant Science, or related field (strong agricultural degree or relevant experience preferred).
- 5–10 years of hands-on experience in large-scale sugarcane estate agriculture, covering cultivation, agronomy, and farm systems.
- Proven record in designing and managing agronomic trials and implementing best practices.
- Proficiency in farm management systems, GIS, drone tech, and sustainability methods.
- Expertise in soil fertility, nutrition, irrigation, pest/weed management, and mechanized planting and harvesting.
- Strong data analysis capability with agronomic or statistical software tools.
- Excellent communication skills with demonstrated stakeholder engagement and team leadership.
- Commercially savvy with budget planning and financial monitoring experience.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills, adaptability to climate and operational challenges, and compliance awareness.
- Strong proficiency in English.
