Job Description
Overview
Information Technology Engineer (IT Engineer) is a second-line (L2) engineering role for retail systems across the group. Your week is split 50/50: half is owning the escalations L1 can't close, half is real project delivery with dates attached — store openings, upgrades, rollouts and automation. Both halves are protected, so support never eats your project time and a deadline never means a P1 goes unanswered.
Responsibilities
L2 support
- Own every escalation from L1: confirm or correct the diagnosis, then drive it to resolution rather than defaulting to the vendor
- Handle the faults L1 can't — diverged replication, posting and statement failures with a data cause, job-queue and integration breakages, permission and configuration problems, server and service faults across head office and store infrastructure
- Lead incidents when a store, brand or country is down; shape the response, keep the business informed in plain language, and write the post-incident note
- Work vendors and upstream teams properly: open cases with evidence, push them, and verify the fix before accepting it
- Turn every problem you solve twice into a runbook, script or alert so L1 can close it next time without you
- Act as the on-call escalation point behind the L1 rota
Project delivery
- Deliver store openings, relocations and closures end to end on the systems side: infrastructure, connectivity, tills, application setup, data, go-live support and handover
- Run upgrades and migrations — platform versions, database moves, server replacements, network and VPN cutovers — with a written, tested plan and evidence-based verification
- Build the monitoring and automation this estate doesn't yet have
- Improve master data and integration flows at source, working with the business and upstream teams who own the data
- Support brand launches and country rollouts as the systems lead for the retail platform
- Document everything you build so it survives you being on leave
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field
- 4+ years in an L2 / systems engineering role, owning incidents end to end (retail or multi-site business systems preferred)
- Proven project delivery — store/site rollouts, upgrades or migrations run independently
- Multi-country or multi-brand operations, and LS Central / Dynamics NAV / Business Central exposure, an advantage
- Strong SQL and PowerShell (automation, safe scripting)
- Windows Server & SQL Server administration
- Practical networking — firewalls, VPN, DNS
- Strong communication in English
