RESPONSIBILITIES

The SMU Urban Institute, launched in early 2024, is a university-level research institute dedicated to advancing an interdisciplinary research agenda. Leveraging SMU's strategic position as a dynamic management university in Singapore's city centre, the Institute aims to make a meaningful impact through the study of Asian cities.

We are currently seeking individuals with specific skillsets to support the various ongoing research projects at the Institute.We are searching for a Research Fellow (RF) to conduct research connected to the project Infrastructures of Care and Everyday Elderly Mobilities in Singapore. The project examines how older people experience and navigate care in Singapore beyond the normative framings offered by formal institutions and established social networks. It seeks tounderstand how forms of care and vulnerability are produced, experienced, and negotiated through everyday urbanspaces and mobilities.

As the project is interdisciplinary in scope, candidates with academic backgrounds in the interdisciplinary social sciences are encouraged to apply. In particular, we are interested in applicants with experience integrating quantitative and qualitative methods. The position will be based in Singapore.

The RF will work closely with the PI to manage and execute the project. The job scope involves:

Analysing large-scale survey data and integrating quantitative findings with qualitative research.
Working with the project team to conceptualise, develop, and prepare research papers for publication, with opportunities to lead papers emerging from the project.
Presenting research findings at conferences and seminars.
Assisting with the administrative management of the project and other tasks contributing to its successful completion.

QUALIFICATIONS

A doctorate degree by the date of appointment in the interdisciplinary social sciences, which might include a field like: human geography, urban studies, sociology, or public policy.
Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills.
Experience conducting research in Singapore.
Excellent written communication skills, demonstrated through academic publications or other substantial research writing.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
