Hands-on Software Architect — Fractional

Magellan is building an AI operating system for e-commerce. Our ambition is to give businesses a system that understands their operations, prepares work across departments, and executes it within the authority they set.

The architectural challenge is making that dependable: shared business memory, consistent permissions, trustworthy data, and actions that can be traced and verified across connected systems.

We're looking for an experienced, hands-on Software Architect to help lead that work and shape Magellan's technical direction.

You'll work directly with the founder and our engineer, with meaningful influence over the architecture, implementation priorities and engineering standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

Reviewing the existing architecture and code, identifying critical gaps and setting practical implementation priorities.
Defining how the shared platform, AI decision layer and business modules work together.
Guiding data architecture, tenant isolation, permissions and reliable execution across external integrations.
Reviewing consequential code changes and helping deliver complete workflows into production.

You should have experience building and operating production software, with a strong understanding of SaaS architecture, data integrity, APIs and failure recovery. You can explain the trade-offs behind your decisions and remain comfortable working directly with code.

Experience with AI systems, e-commerce, financial workflows or other systems where correctness matters is particularly relevant.

Our application stack includes NestJS, PostgreSQL, Redis and AWS.

This role suits someone who enjoys building with a small team, taking responsibility and making thoughtful decisions under real constraints. We value someone who challenges assumptions constructively and connects engineering choices to the needs of the business.

Magellan's first operating environment will be UrbanFlowers, an established e-commerce business in Bangkok. That gives us direct access to the people, workflows and operational problems the product is being built to serve.

The engagement is paid and part-time, initially around one day per week. You'll have the opportunity to shape the product's technical foundations and grow with the company.

For the right person, we're open to discussing a longer-term partnership, an expanded technical leadership role and equity or options, depending on the contribution and commitment we agree together.
